History of Learfield Communications

As the multi-media rights’ holder for the Penn State University Athletic Department, Penn State Sports Properties is just one of more than 52 divisions of Learfield Sports.  Headquartered in Plano, Texas, Learfield Sports has been in operation since 1975 as part of Learfield Communications, Inc.

Learfield Communications started in 1972 as a small farm network, then known as Missouri Network, Inc., founded by Clyde Lear and Derry Brownfield.  The two man shop broadcasted over six Missouri radio stations has emerged into a diverse media enterprise, with more than 350 employees, headquartered in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Learfield Sports began in 1975, selling the radio rights for the University of Missouri.  Since 1975, Learfield Sports has expanded to sell various media and marketing rights for more than 50 univeristy athletic departments, individual stadium agreements, the Black Coaches Association, and several major conferences, including the Big Ten and Missouri Valley Conferences.

Penn State University became a Learfield Sports property in 2005, operating out of one office in State College.  In order to best handle each and every client, Penn State Sports Properties grew in 2006 to three offices, now serving Penn State’s partners out of State College, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia.
